Earlier in the semester during class, we briefly visited TheGameCrafter.com, which allows one to make their own board games and even buy games made by others. While everyone was laughing at “Porn: The Game,” I was interested in the website as a whole. And for my third paper, I would like to learn more about this website and how it fits into the board game playing community. Through a YouTube/Vlog video I want to discuss the significance of this website. I think that this website is important because it allows people to explore games made by independent designers who are avid gamers, who are not just looking for money. And this website brings gamers together by sharing new, original games. This is an idea that I want to convey with the support of an actual game purchased through the website. A game called “Tornado” goes for $9.99 and that is portable, fun, and interactive will help me compare the games from this website to commercialize games. These are just my initial thoughts, but as I learn more about the website, and its games, my topic ideas will become clearer.
I want to do this project idea because from the beginning I liked TGC.com and when searching through its available games, Tornado seems like a fun time, and it is one of the cheapest games.
I am yet to purchase Tornado because I am hesitant about my topic idea. The shipping takes longer than expected (maybe because they have to actually print a new copy of the game), so I need to order soon and think about whether or not I want to stick with this idea in the meantime. Feedback would be helpful if somebody, specifically Rob, thinks that this topic is worth doing.
I think that I would start off the video in a Vlog form, possibly showing pictures, and discussing the website, or maybe doing a commentary over the website. I would then like to have video clips of the game tornado, discussing the mechanics and discussing how it is unique to any other game I have played. I want to then tie in the website to the game and convince the audience that TGC is a resource to gamers, like BGA, because of x,y, and z. Or maybe, I will be disappointed with the game, and its pieces and I can describe why I was unhappy, but I can talk to someone who is. I would also like to contact the creator of Tornado, someone in the TGC chatroom, or the creator of TGC in order to see different perspectives on the success or failure of the website.
Overall, I hope/think this topic has enough breadth to cover a seven minute video because this website is intriguing. If only I was creative enough to produce my own game and purchase it through this website, that would be cool. But buying one the next best thing.
